Chapter 6

The Second Farewell

It was a Friday evening. When the clock struck six, the bustling office quickly quietened as everyone left on the dot. For once, nobody would be working late.

‘Have a good Chuseok break!’

On a desk calendar, the three-day national holidays were circled in red. Everyone was looking forward to the extra-long break which, including the weekend, would stretch for five days until the following Wednesday.

There were those who booked an overseas vacation; someone planned to spend the break binge-playing video games. Han Areum, who had just graduated from being the newbie in the office, was going back to her hometown.

I should hurry.

Areum took the airtight banchan container that she’d left in the office fridge and placed it into her travel bag. Because she planned to head to the train station straight from work, she had prepared the side dish beforehand and brought it with her this morning.

‘I hope I’ll make it in time.’

She grabbed her stuff, hurried to the subway station and pushed herself into the crowded train heading towards Seoul Station. Chuseok was the time of the mass exodus across the country, so the express train tickets had to be bought a month earlier. The tickets were quickly snapped up, so Areum had no choice but to book an earlier timing than she’d have preferred. If she didn’t hurry, she might miss the train.

‘Faster, faster,’ she muttered under her breath.

At Seoul Station, rows of trains stood at the platform tracks, soon to depart to the different provinces in the country. Train timings and platform numbers flashed on the huge electronic screen. As she kept an ear out for the announcements blaring from the speakers, she weaved through the sea of people and took the escalator up to her platform, all the while anxiously checking the time. She spotted her train just right ahead. There were a few minutes left to board. However, she couldn’t help but imagine that the train would depart right then, leaving her stranded on the platform.

‘Ha— That was close.’

Luckily, none of that happened. Only when she settled down in her seat did the worry stop bubbling over. She triple-checked the train, carriage and seat number on her ticket before stretching her tense limbs and relaxing into the seat.

‘Welcome aboard the KTX bound for Busan. We’ll do our best to make your journey as comfortable as possible.’

Accompanied by a bright melody, the announcement filtered through the speakers. As the anxiety ebbed, a surge of eagerness filled her. It’d been a long time since she last went home.

How did I even end up living in Seoul . . .?

Back in school, the thought of Seoul evoked more curiosity than any real longing to experience the bustle of the capital city. And she was curious only because it was her mum’s hometown. Her mum grew up in Seoul and it was through her work that she travelled across the country and ended up meeting Areum’s dad.

According to Mum, she didn’t have the best impression of Dad at first, but he didn’t give up and she eventually opened her heart to him.
